Artificial Intelligence - What's in it for us?

Have you ever thought about why certain songs make you feel a certain way? The obvious answer is that musicians, writers and producers intentionally design those they are very good at it. As an example, in the 19th century, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner engineered the perfect creepy atmospheres with sequences such as “Satan in music ” only by realigning musical notes. Take this same concept and apply it to artificial intelligence (AI). Images of robots, the Terminator, Will Smith and maybe of cyborgs may come to your mind. Have you ever questioned if these images are accurate representations of AI? Do you have a positive or negative perception of AI? Does your understanding and opinion about AI actually matter? In this essay, we will focus on how concepts of the past, present and future shape our collective understanding of artificial intelligence. However, the objective of this essay is to consider our own biases as designers. Through a technological lens, we want to examine how our collective conception of particular concepts and ideologies in time (past, present and future) shape how we view the world. As we consider them, we can make better, critical creative decisions as designers. In three sections, we will cover how the Judeo-Christian tradition has shaped both our collective fear and fascination with a transcendent artificial intelligence. Then, we will talk about how AI is framed as an antagonistic and destructive power in the present. Finally, circling back, we will speculate on how AI will generate new kinds of religions and cults in the future.
